Reading speed test
Find out how many words per minute you read. It takes about 2 minutes, it's free, and there is nothing to sign up for or install.
Read at your usual pace, without rushing. The clock starts when you tap "Start" and stops when you tap "Done". Then answer 3 simple questions.
How is the result calculated?
We divide the words in the text by the time you took to read it. The questions don't change that number: they check that you really read it, because going fast without understanding isn't reading. Nothing leaves this page: it all happens in your browser.
What is a good reading speed?
A review of 190 studies with more than 18,000 people estimated that adults read silently in English at about 238 words per minute for non-fiction and about 260 for fiction. Use it as a reference, not a grade: your speed changes with the language, the topic and how tired you are.
How to read faster without losing the thread
- Read every day, even if only for 10 minutes. Practice helps most.
- Put your phone and notifications away while you read.
- Raise your speed little by little, and slow down as soon as you stop understanding.
- Retest with a different text now and then to see your progress.
What is reading one word at a time?
It's called RSVP: words appear one by one, always in the same spot, so your eyes don't have to travel along the line. That's what Lince does, a speed reading app for Android. Try it right here or use it on your own EPUB and PDF books.
Now see how long classic books take at your speed, or learn what RSVP reading is.
